Table Tennis: Intermediate

Table Tennis

The Table Tennis group meets every week for two hours of fun at Highnam. All play is in scored doubles matches to ensure maximum use of our three tables, in a spirit of friendly competition.

New members welcome.

Don’t be fooled. Our weekly table tennis sessions are not all gentle ping pong!

We play for fun, not prizes. But every game is played in a competitive spirit. All games are played as doubles. We have our own foolproof system for picking random pairings, which can be men’s, ladies’ or mixed.

We may all be in our Third Age, but the number of years under our belts has nothing to do with the standard of play. We have some pretty useful players who give the younger ones a good run-around. That keeps everybody on their toes and improving. And the experts are always willing to give a few coaching tips.

Because we mix up the pairings all the time, some of the less skilled players noticeably improve their technique through games against the stronger ones. But there is always room for the form book to be upset.

We have three tables on the go during our two-hour sessions, so nobody sits out too long: just enough for socializing and a little banter. So it’s all good exercise, but good fun too!

The group has just celebrated the birthday of its oldest member, 90-year-old Cliff Nash, who still plays a mean game. And among those not far behind him in the age stakes are four octogenerians, each a formidable force to be reckoned with at the other end of the table from those callow youngsters in their mere 60s and 70s.
