Visit The Wilson for a fun-filled weekend celebrating the closing of ‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’, our first ever living exhibition.
14th December 2017
‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ is closing on the 17th December and to celebrate The Wilson has put together a jam-packed weekend of events and seasonal celebrations. This exhibition has been about opening up the museum in new ways, inviting our visitors to respond to and use our spaces however they want and breaking down the barriers that people sometimes encounter when entering a museum or gallery. The closing weekend furthers this central aim, programming events for everyone, including families, history lovers and performance enthusiasts. Starting with a night of innovative ‘scratch’ performances on Thursday 14th December (7pm – 10pm) and ‘Wilson’s Christmas Wonders’, a talk on the fascinating history of the Wilson family’s own Christmas traditions, the weekend includes ‘Yay for Play’ building a cardboard world in the gallery on Saturday 16th December (10am – 4pm) and finally a day of Victorian-style seasonal celebrations on Sunday 17th December (11:30am – 3pm)
‘BREAKING_ NEW GROUND’ opened on the 11th November. This exhibition has revealed the secrets and stories behind some of the key objects from our art gallery and museum collections, including a watercolour by E.A Wilson from the Terra Nova journey in the early twentieth century and the infamous Sherborne Street Chimney Sweep. Our curators selected and interpreted these objects with an emphasis on revealing the secrets that live inside our team and are the things you can only know after years of working with these objects. Alongside the objects, The Wilson worked with Spike Island in Bristol to build a giant temporary wooden structure, which filled part of the gallery and provided a space for visitors to contemplate an important question: The Wilson – what are the possibilities? Over the past five weeks, The Wilson has invited various groups to use and respond to this space and the inspirational objects, including school groups, Morris Dancers, a choir, willow weaving workshops and even an audio book club for the visually impaired. This exhibition has been an opportunity for visitors to contribute to the future of the museum at this exciting time. This weekend, from the 14th – 17th December, will be visitors’ last chance to contribute to this exhibition.
For tickets for ‘Wilson’s Christmas Wonders’ please see our website: www.cheltenhammuseum.org.uk, for all other events over the closing weekend, no ticket is required.
