WHAT IS AN ECO-BRICK?

An ecobrick is a building block made entirely from unrecyclable plastic. It’s created by filling a plastic bottle with clean, dry plastic until it’s packed tightly and can be used as a building block.

Bring your non-recyclable plastic waste and join us for a crafting session with a difference. Once you’ve learnt how to make your own eco-bricks, they can be used in all sorts of sustainable building projects, which makes them a great way to dispose of plastic waste that would otherwise end up in landfill, and potentially, the ocean.

All you need to bring with you is an empty plastic bottle or two (any size) and a bag of unrecyclable plastic.

Unrecyclable plastic includes things like:
Plastic bags
Photo paper
Crisp packets
Food containers
Straws
Plastic cutlery
Cling film
Plastic fruit and vegetable packaging
Polystyrene (or Styrofoam) – this is a petroleum-based product that can’t be recycled. Lots of products are made out of this including food containers and packaging.

Just bring along your supplies and learn how to create your own building blocks which you can then use for your own projects, or we will donate to local communities using eco-bricks. As usual, children are more than welcome (they’ll love helping to pack the bottles!) and tea/coffee and homemade cake are provided.

Plastics are made from petro-chemicals. These chemicals don’t fit back into the ecologies around us. Scientific studies show that these chemicals are toxic to humans. Eventually, plastics that are littered, burned or dumped degrade into these poisonous chemicals.

Over time, these chemicals leach into the land, water and air, and are absorbed by plants and animals. Eventually they reach us, causing diseases of all kinds: birth defects, hormonal imbalances, and even cancer. Even engineered dump sites are not a solution. Whether it is ten years, or one hundred, these chemicals will eventually seep into the bio- sphere, affecting our farms & families.

Nor do traditional recycling facilities solve plastics. Industrial recycling simply isn’t perfect –  plastics are inevitably lost or down- cycled. Even the highest quality plastic is eventually cycled down into a product or material that is no longer recyclable. There is no way around it: ALL plastic eventually ends up back in nature.

Plastics need to be either eliminated, or put in the right place. Save plastics from a toxic destiny. PET bottles will last for 300-500 years if they are kept from sunlight. When packed tightly, they make an amazing brick that can be used over and over for building.
