This workshop will teach the process of natural dying using a variety of plants found in the Museum’s walled garden and the surrounding countryside.

Exploring everything from the common plants Nettle, Ivey and Marigold to the galls and barks of Beach and Oak trees, the workshop will show you how to create a beautiful range of colours with plants you can find easily and locally. We will also be experimenting with the brighter colours of Madder, Logwood, Annatto and Turmeric to achieve a varied and tonal colour palette on silk and linen.

The workshop will give you the chance to experiment with the different dyes and create your own unique colour pallet on a variety of differing fibres.

You will then be shown the traditional Japanese techniques of Shibori, which will enable you to create bold, repeat patterns through blocking, clamping and stitching the cloth. Using these techniques you can create your own naturally dyed length of silk to take home at the end of the workshop.  Materials provided, bring a notebook and pen. For adults and 16+.

£25 (£20) Booking necessary – call 01453 763394
