About Roger Phillips MBE

Roger is in some senses an anti-academic. What he sets out to do is learn and understand a scientific discipline and then explain the subject to the general reader. His success is in part due to his being able to work in both camps without patronising the one or demeaning the work of the other. His knack is finding new ways of bringing known material to a larger public.

Roger Phillips originally trained as a painter at the Chelsea Art School and he has pioneered the use of colour photographs for reliable plant identification. Most of his photographs are taken using a plain background so that every detail of the plant specimen can be examined. His work has been so successful over the last 45 years, that he now has more than 40 books to his credit ranging from Roses to Mushrooms, through Vegetables, Trees, Perennial Garden Flowers, Shrubs and Wild Flowers. The books are translated into eight European languages and his international sales have now topped five million copies. Go to Google for more detail.

He was awarded an MBE for his voluntary work protecting the gardens of London Squares.
