Stroud Film Festival 2018 will run at ten independent venues across the town and beyond, from its launch at the Prince Albert pub in Rodborough on Sunday 4th March to its finale at Lansdown Hall on Sunday 18th March.

Following the success of the previous three years, this year’s festival will aim to appeal to an even wider range of film tastes with some newly released films, classic favourites and films for children. Several film screenings also include a unique chance to meet well known filmmakers (some with Stroud connections) talking about their work.

The Festival is a collaboration between local films groups such as the Lansdown Film Club and Stroud Film Society and all the venues showing films which include Lansdown Hall, Stroud Valleys Artspace, Atelier, the Museum in the Park, the Prince Albert, the British School and The Electric Cinema in Wotton-Under-Edge.  This year, these will be joined for the first time by Hawkwood College and a surprise cinema venue in Stroud!

We’re also really pleased to be joined by Stroud’s independent arts magazine Good On Paper who are putting on an exhibition at SVA John Street and a very special film/music night at SVA’s other venue the Brunel Goods Shed. Music and film is a strong theme this year and we are delighted to announce that our town’s brand new venue the Marshall Rooms will also be hosting film events as part of the festival.

Films about the growing popularity of cold water swimming is another theme this year, with shorts and features from around the world!

As well as screenings the festival also features workshops including a one day Film School workshop at Atelier for local people to learn filmmaking skills. Following this is a 60 second film challenge!  Everyone’s invited to take part in this One Day Film Challenge. Filmmakers at all levels are challenged to make a 60 second film in 16 hours: there’s a theme which will only be made public on the day. Selected entries will be projected onto the big screen at the short film event the following week at Lansdown Hall.

Also part of the programme will be some special film events, including a themed screening with music, food and costume, a Stroud premiere and a whole weekend of animation at the Museum in the Park.

Watch out! Continuing from last year, events will be happening outside the festival fortnight itself, one in February and another in the summer.

The festival is a non-profit collaboration between the venues and organisations involved. We’d like to thank everyone who’s given their time to make this happen and to Stroud Town Council, Stroud Arts Festival and Film Hub South West who’ve provided essential support.

If you’d like to be part of the festival through involvement in publicity or staffing an event, please get in touch.
