Bemborough Farm B Near Barton

This area is managed under the Environmentally Sensitive Areas scheme to protect the various features of botanical and archaeological importance which can be found around Bemborough Farm.

This includes the implementation of a comprehensive grazing regime to protect the grassland at Barton Larches, which has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to the presence of Cotswold Pennycress and other floral species of national importance.

The small mounds and hollows located here are the result of shallow quarrying in the 19th Century.

In the springtime, the slopes of Barton Valley are peppered with bee orchids, green-winged orchids, common rockrose and cowslips.

Scrub clearance and careful grazing management will further enhance and protect this unimproved limestone grassland.

The field known locally as “The Ruins” has been reverted from arable cropping to permanent grassland in order to protect the four underlying bowl barrows which form part of the Bemborough Farm round barrow cemetery.
