FLOODGATES FARM Near BERKELEY
These unimproved permanent pastures, hay meadows and recreated meadows are being managed under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme to encourage the species diversity and richness of wild grasses such as sweet vernal grass and flowers such as black knapweed, yarrow, greater birdsfoot trefoil and pepper saxifrage.
The tall hedgerows provide habitat for insects, birds and bats and the numerous ponds are a haven for wildlife.
The Saxon to early-Medieval ridge and furrow is still present in many of these fields. Ridge and furrow is the result of a system of farming in which long ridges (banks) are formed by ploughing and the resultant furrows (ditches) improves the drainage.
