Boulders Cheltenham takes fitness to bold new heights

Centrum Park, Cheltenham

Venue: Boulders Cheltenham

For those wanting to get in shape but the gym isn’t for them, or for fitness fans wishing to mix up their routine by adding something different, then one ascending business in Cheltenham may well have the workout they’re looking for.

Bouldering is elevating people’s interest in fitness since becoming popular during lockdown, with around one million people in the UK now climbing regularly, according to the Association of British Climbing Walls. With the sport now taking off and becoming a popular alternative to lifting weights, Boulders, situated on Centram Park in Kingsditch, is giving new climbers the opportunity to ‘Give it a Go’ with an introductory class. The hour-long session with an instructor provides beginners with the skills needed to use the walls safely and start their bouldering journey. By the end of the session, they will have the option to self-certify as a competent boulderer, meaning they are free to climb unsupervised any time. Once they’re signed off as competent they can supervise two other climbers, making this session a great place to start for those hoping to bring the family along to enjoy their first foray intobouldering.

Ollie Noakes, Managing Director of Boulders said: “Bouldering made its debut at the 2020 Olympics, and although it was already starting to grow, being under the international spotlight meant it really caught fire on a wider scale. It offers many benefits – as well as being physically demanding and mentally stimulating, bouldering is also very social and gives the opportunity to meet new people. It’s a sport which ticks all the boxes for endurance, strength, speed and problem-solving, so it’s good for both body and mind.

“It adds an enthralling new dimension to anyone’s fitness regime; even people that had never considered climbing are now completely hooked on it. It’s no surprise that it’s creating a lot of intrigue, which is why we’re urging new climbers to come along to one of our ‘Give it a Go’ taster sessions and see for themselves what all the fuss is about!”

Memberships are also available on a paid monthly basis, which gives unlimited access to the centre and includes free shoe hire worth £4 per session. However, for a limited time only, Boulders is running a special offer of £10 for the first month of membership for those who sign up on the day they attend a ‘Give it a Go’ session.

With a free Ladies Night coaching session on Thursday nights, as well as free drop-in coaching and adult technique classes each week, Boulders has created a programme to suit everyone. For those with spare time, parents are also being encouraged to drop by during the day when the kids are at school to try out the dizzying heights of bouldering and hang out with other beginner climbers.
