Charity banner thief strikes again targeting hospice

The only hospice in Gloucestershire with inpatient beds has put out a plea for the return of a stolen charity fundraising banner, after suffering a theft of its fundraising material for the second year running.

The vinyl banner, promoting Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s upcoming Ride for Ryder charity cycling event on Sunday 23rdJune has gone missing from the T Junction with Dews Court and Paynes Pitch in Churchdown, Gloucester. The theft took place sometime between Saturday 20th April and Thursday 25th April.

Unbelievably it is the SECOND time that the hospice’s banner advertising its flagship cycling charity event has been stolen in this area - a banner advertising the same event was stolen in the run up to last year’s event. It was eventually returned, mysteriously left overnight on the steps of the Churchdown Community Hub, following the hospice’s plea for it to be given back.

Mike Tague, Head of Hospice Fundraising at the hospice said, “It is quite unbelievable that we have suffered the theft of a banner advertising our charity event for the second year running in the same area. Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court provides expert and compassionate palliative and bereavement care to the local community, but we can only do this as a result of the generosity of our supporters and our vital fundraising events."

"Funds raised at events such as Ride for Ryder are critical for us and advertising with outdoor banners increases awareness of the event and encourages people to support it.”

“We carefully invest our limited marketing budget on producing banners such as this one and to have one stolen for the second year running is upsetting for us all here at Sue Ryder."

Dave Cant is a Churchdown resident and volunteers for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice as Course Manager the Ride for Ryder cycling event. He said, “We rotate our advertising banners to maximise awareness for the event, and when I went to collect the banner to relocate it to its next spot, ironically at Gloucestershire Police Headquarters in Quedgeley, I discovered it had been stolen. The cable ties had been cut as the ties were left on the floor. They had been cut with a pair of cutters.”

The theft has been reported to Gloucestershire Police and anyone with information is asked to contact them using the reference number GC-20190425-0467.
