Cheltenham Borough Council declares climate emergency

Following unanimous resolutions in February 2019, the council’s cabinet has considered the requests from full Council and decided to declare a climate emergency in its meeting on 9 July 2019.

The motion includes the following points:

  • To make Cheltenham carbon neutral by 2030;
  • To call on Westminster to provide the powers and resources to make achieving this target possible and to work with other governments (both within the UK and internationally) to determine and implement best practice methods to limit Global Warming to less than 1.5°C;
  • To continue to work with partners across the town, county and region to deliver this new goal through all relevant strategies and plans;
  • To report to full Council with the actions the authority will take to address this emergency.

Cllr Alex Hegenbarth, cabinet member for corporate services, says: “It’s essential that we take action now and ensure that we are doing everything in our power to tackle climate change, reduce carbon emissions and work towards becoming carbon neutral.

“Reducing carbon emissions will deliver positive environmental benefits and minimise Cheltenham’s contribution to further climate change.”

Cllr Chris Coleman, cabinet member for clean and green environment, said: “This is very welcome news and a positive step forward. Our residents, communities, businesses and partners have a vital role to play and we will look to work in close partnership with them to share resources and best practice.

“We are also seeking expert advice on how future initiatives and projects can best be supported, so that opportunities are not missed to reduce the carbon footprint of both the council and the borough as a whole.”

A report will be taken to Cabinet in September 2019 and full Council in October 2019, which will detail the actions the council will take to address this emergency.
