Hospice’s recycling scheme raises tree-rific £8,300 for local families needing care

Cheltenham

A green initiative that saw local people recycle their real Christmas trees has raised £8,300 of vital funds for a hospice.

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice’s ‘Treecycling’ scheme – run in partnership with JustHelping – saw volunteers collect over 750 Christmas trees from people’s homes in Cheltenham, Gloucester and Tewkesbury earlier this month, in return for a donation.

The team at Greenway Tree Care then chipped the Christmas trees into mulch, which has been donated to local deserving sites – reducing landfill and supporting local businesses.

The initiative has raised £8,300 for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. The only specialist palliative care inpatient unit in Gloucestershire, the hospice cares for people with life-limiting conditions, as well as supporting their families.

Megan Platt, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: “Thank you so much to everyone who has supported our 2020 Treecycling scheme. A special thank you to the teams at JustHelping and Greenway Tree Care and to our amazing volunteers for their help.

“We are delighted to have raised a tree-rific £8,300. This could pay for more than 400 hours of our expert care, supporting patients and their loved ones through the most difficult times of their lives.

“As a charity, all our care is given for free to those who need it, but it costs £10,000 per day to keep our services running. The Treecycling donations will help us to continue to offer our compassionate care and be there when it matters for patients and their families.

“We are excited to announce our Treecycling scheme will return in 2021; we will share more information about it later this year.”
