Nine year-old Evie’s epic Everest stair climb for Sue Ryder hospice

Cheltenham

Evie Everest stair climb 1

A nine year-old supporter from Cheltenham is scaling Mount Everest lockdown style from her stairs at home to raise funds for a local hospice.

Incredible lockdown adventurer Evie Lowicki has set herself a challenge of climbing her stairs 3,871 times to reach the 8,848 metre summit – which is the highest point on Earth.

Since 30th April, super fit Evie has climbed an average of 246 flights of stairs a day. She aims to reach the summit on Friday 15th May.

So far, she has climbed higher than Ben Nevis, Mont Blanc and Kilimanjaro.

Determined to make the experience as realistic as possible, when Evie reached the height of Everest Base Camp on Saturday 9th May, she started sleeping in a tent at night.

Her charity challenge has raised £800 for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, which cared for her Nanny, Yvonne.

Evie, who attends Glenfall Community Primary School in Charlton Kings, came up with the idea of her challenge after hearing about the virtual Everest Challenge on the radio.

She wanted to do it in memory of her Nanny and raise funds for the hospice to say thank you.

Evie said: “I thought it would be amazing too if I could go back to school and say that I climbed Mount Everest during lockdown.

“I heard that because of Coronavirus that there isn’t enough money for charities like Sue Ryder, who were there to help my Nanny before she died.

“I decided to do this challenge in her memory and raise some money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice because they need it more than ever and I want them to still be there to help look after people like they did for my Nanny.”

This isn’t the first time big-hearted Evie has taken on a charity challenge – she has previously run the Cheltenham Half Community Mile in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice several times.

Matt Reay, Senior Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, said: “We want to say a huge thank you to Evie for her incredible support at this challenging time. Evie has well and truly reached new heights with her fantastic fundraising! The funds raised will help to make sure we can offer our expert palliative care and be there when it matters for people at the most difficult time of their lives.”
