Stunning Snowdrop Open Gardens raise £1,000 for local hospice

Cheltenham

Kind-hearted volunteers opened the doors of a Gloucestershire hospice so local people could enjoy its splendid snowdrop displays – and raised over £1,000 of vital funds.

Earlier this month, visitors had the chance to tour the historic grounds of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham at its first ever Snowdrop Open Gardens.

Organised by hospice volunteers, the event saw people admiring an array of snowdrop varieties, including the Galanthus Nivalis, Faringdon Double, Three Ships and Cedric Morris.

There was also the opportunity to spot other winter flowers, such as helleborus, cyclamen and narcissus, in the grounds of the Grade 2* listed medieval estate.

Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice is Gloucestershire’s only specialist inpatient unit for specialist palliative care. The hospice provides expert palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions and also supports their families.

The hospice’s grounds are tended all year round by a team of volunteer gardeners to keep them looking beautiful for patients and their families.

Visitors at the Snowdrop Open Gardens also enjoyed freshly ground coffee and homemade cake at the hospice’s regular pop up coffee morning ‘Coffee in the Court’.

"A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support our very first Snowdrop Open Gardens," said Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice volunteer Paulette Vallois, who organised the event.

“It was a great day – the sun shone, the snowdrops were nodding in the breeze and our Coffee at the Court was a hub of activity.

“We raised just over £1,000, which will help to support local families needing the hospice’s compassionate palliative care and bereavement support.”

Paulette and other volunteers are now busy organising another event to raise funds for the hospice – a Frog Race – and are inviting local people to come along.

“We are planning a fun evening of frog racing at Churchdown Community Centre on Friday 6th March at 7pm and would love people in the local community to come and have a go at sponsoring the races and bidding for frogs. Tickets are £10 and include a Ploughman’s Supper. To find out more please email paulette.vallois@suerydercare.org” said Paulette.
