Supporting young people into adulthood at the heart of proposal to council’s cabinet

Gloucester

At it’s next meeting (Wednesday 24 April), Gloucestershire County Council’s cabinet will be asked to approve plans to transform a former care home into accommodation to help young people develop the skills they need to live independently.

Council’s cabinet will be asked to consider changing Trevone House in Gloucester into semi-independent accommodation, as well as other specialist services, that will help young people by giving them the support they need as they head into adulthood and find their independence.

The plans form part of the council’s sufficiency strategy, agreed at January’s cabinet; ensuring children and young people in the county get the right placement, first time and the chance of flourishing future.

If approved, the building will host semi-independent accommodation for young people aged 16 plus, a designated space for day provision for the Intensive Recovery Intervention Service and residential health placements for young people needing mental health support.

To make sure the building is fit for purpose, the council propose to invest £2.5 million for refurbishing and building work.

The refurbished building could accommodate up to 21 young people at any one time and will ensure young people are placed in a timely and planned way. It will allow young people to grow and develop in one place rather than having to move placement and provider once they begin to flourish.

The council will liaise with the local community at all stages of this project,  working to ensure these young people become part of the wider community.

Cllr Mark Hawthorne, Leader of Gloucestershire County Council said: “We spend too much on high cost, out of county placements that often keep young people away from their network of friends and family.

“If approved, the new accommodation will allow young people to stay closer to their family and friends, and will allow us to make available funding go further in supporting young people.”
