Care home hosts first ever county show
A local care home stepped in to save the day when the Stroud County Show was cancelled – by hosting its very own version.
Care UK’s Scarlet House, on Westward Road, invited local people to showcase their talents as part of its ‘Almost Virtual Scarlet House Show’, in support of the Prince’s Trust – and saw over 20 entries.
To make up for the absence of the Stroud County Show, which was cancelled once again due to the pandemic, the team at Scarlet House created its own event complete with five categories in which local people could enter, including: photography, baking, flower arranging, fruit and vegetables, and handicrafts, which also incorporated handmade toys and jewellery.
The judging panel, made up of residents at Scarlet House, had a whale of a time reviewing the huge variety of entries, with everyone impressed by the creativity and talent demonstrated by local people, team members and fellow residents.
Highlights from the ‘Almost Virtual Scarlet House Show’ included a large crocheted dragon, which scooped first place for community member Rebecca Kukula in the ‘handmade toy’ category. While Lifestyle Coordinator Emily Shiers secured first place in the waterside section of the photography competition, with an image of a sunrise over a local canal.
The talented residents at Scarlet House also took part in the show and were thrilled to be given top prizes in the baking and flower arranging categories, while the home’s Clinical Lead, Janice Dent, received special recognition for her knitted rose, which took first place in the handmade jewellery section.
Sharon Morgan, Home Manager at Scarlet House, said: “Scarlet House residents love the Stroud County Show, and were so disappointed when it was cancelled again. So, we decided to host our very own, and residents were thrilled to take part in our version of the well-loved event. We certainly have some talented residents, team members and friends in the community, which made the judging all the more exciting.
“Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to everyone who took part. We’re thrilled to have had such a successful Scarlet House Show!”
