Sue Ryder staff call on community to join them and brrrave the cold water for hospice
On Thursday 1st December, staff from Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, will be plunging into water between 5-10ºC as they pledge to raise money so that they can continue to support people and their families through the most difficult times of their lives.
‘The Big Dip’, which is open to anyone aged 16 and over, will take place at the Sandford Lido in Cheltenham thanks to the generosity of the pool operators who will be especially opening the pool for the charity event.
For a £10 donation, with all money raised going to the hospice, brrrave swimmers can enjoy up to 45 minutes in the water, kick-started by Father Christmas himself, as well as festive music and warm refreshments for all.
As part of their challenge, throughout November Sue Ryder Nurse Stuart Golledge and colleagues will be undertaking a daily cold water dip to help raise further funds for the hospice, and they’re asking people to join them in that teeth-chattering charity challenge too.
Stuart said, "Through the entire month of November, come rain or shine, wind or snow and frosts - which I am hoping there will be plenty of - I will be doing a dip-a-day in cold water to raise funds for those needing our care.
"For all the people I have met along the way, all those who my colleagues and I have cared for that have been so brave and heroic and amazing - I am raising money so we can support more of these kinds of people.
"I would love others to join us if they can. You don’t have to swim in a cold water lake to make it count, it could be a dip in a paddling pool, cold shower or even a wheelie bin – culminating in The Big Dip at Sandford Park Lido on 1st December."
The event at Sandford Parks Lido on Keynsham Road in Cheltenham will start at 11.30am, with The Big Dip taking place at midday. Gina Drummond, Operations Manager at the Lido said: “We are delighted to be hosting this cold water fundraiser for Sue Ryder. It’s a great opportunity to support a local charity and help them to raise much needed funds for such an important cause, whilst also promoting the health benefits that can be gained from cold water swimming.
“Cold water swimming can be fun and exhilarating, but it’s also important that people are fit and well to take part so we would urge people to read up about cold water swimming on our website before signing up,” Gina added.
Tamsin Grainger, Community Fundraiser at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, who will also be braving the cold for the hospice, adds: “The Big Dip on 1st December is a great way to kick-start the festive season with a feel good buzz, whilst raising vital funds so that we can be there for families, providing our expert and compassionate care. We can’t wait to see you there!”
