What is Temple Cuisine?

A Hindu temple or mandir is a structure that’s designed to bring people and Gods together. Hinduism places great emphasis on the role of food that it has been called “the kitchen religion.” No religious or public function is complete without the distribution of food. In Hindu terms its called prasad (food offered to God).

Food plays an important role in worship, and the food offered to the deities (prasad) is thought to bestow considerable religious merit, purifying body, mind and spirit. Some of the finest Indian chefs devote their life cooking for mass numbers in a temple. Temple cooks follow strict standards of personal cleanliness and kitchen etiquette.

There is a widespread belief that the consciousness of the cook enters the food and influences the mind of the eater. Taking Prasada that has been cooked and offered with devotion inclines the mind towards spirituality.

Proposed Dishes:

• Lentils soup, tempura okra
