Process • Form • Colour An exhibition of ecclesiastical sculpture by Rory Young, accompanied by medieval artefacts

22nd July to 10th September 2017

9am – 5pm Mon – Sat, 10am – 4pm Sun

A forthcoming exhibition at New Brewery Arts:

In 2015 Cirencester based sculptor, Rory Young, installed seven new painted stone statues in the empty medieval niches in the nave screen at St Albans Cathedral. This project was a rare occurrence of polychrome statues being restored to a medieval screen since the Reformation. The work selected for this exhibition shows how an artist moves from original sketches, through to testing ideas in 3D, and then follows the processes of trying different colours and finishes.  The seven statues were developed over a period of five years; and the preparatory work, designs, sketches and both scaled and full-size maquettes are presented publicly at New Brewery Arts, Cirencester for the first time.

Rory Young is a significant artist in Ecclesiastical stone carving. As well as St Albans Cathedral, his work can be seen at the Great West Door of York Minster and Parish Church of St John Baptist, Cirencester.

In addition to Rory’s work, through a collaboration with the Corinium Museum in Cirencester and as part of the town’s Abbey900 celebrations New Brewery Arts are showing a selection of artefacts from the museum and county archives which come from the original abbey building, and show a connection between Rory’s processes today and those of the stone carvers who worked in the town 900 years ago. These historical artefacts are evidence of the quality of medieval monumental masonry, and through fragments of gilding and pigment, show how colour was used. The exhibition will also include two new works in progress by Rory Young.

“Rory Young’s research has been meticulous and his workmanship of tremendous quality. The statues are a fine contemporary reworking of a medieval tradition.”
The Very Reverend Dr Jeffrey John, Dean of St Alban’s Cathedral
