ROS WISE IN ULEY BURY, FIELDS AND RAMPARTS
30 APR - 8 JUN 10AM - 4PM
The large, generous paintings of Ros Wise are brimming with colour, energy and vitality. Her primary inspiration is the natural world. Many of you will recall Ros’ exhibition with Prema last year in which she displayed her large, opulent garden paintings of various RHS gardens and details of herbaceous borders. For the exhibition of her new paintings, Ros turns her focus to the magnificent Uley Bury – an iron age hill fort which keeps watch over our village and its inhabitants. The Bury is a loved and much-used space for walking, view-seeking as well as providing a splendid sanctuary for the mind as we gain perspective, looking to the horizon of so many neighbouring counties. Many footpaths lead up to the plateau, and Ros’ work celebrates the fields, the pathways and more specifically the plants which adorn the various access paths for the ascent as well as the magnificent views once atop the Bury. The space is a particular favourite for Ros and her exhibition charts the seasons, marking the tonal change in light, in the plants and the crops in the fields. Ros Wise was born in Barry, South Wales and attended Reading University and Goldsmiths College where she qualified as an art teacher in secondary education. Having taught in secondary schools in Bristol and London, she moved to Gloucestershire in 1980 and began to paint seriously and teach part time.
