Venue: The Lansdown Gallery, Lansdown, Stroud GL5 1BB (near Stroud Library):

The fourth in a series of biennial exhibitions of art by Art Psychotherapists, Examined Expressions 2019 returns to the Lansdown Gallery in Stroud from 18th to 24th November. Whilst the artworks are not specifically about Art Psychotherapy, the artists’ profession informs the way they approach their art-making.  The exhibition showcases a diverse range of artistic styles including figurative, abstract and conceptually-orientated pieces, and the eleven artists come from three counties: Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Wiltshire.

Art Psychotherapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as a primary form of communication. This approach is particularly useful for expressing and exploring complicated experiences, feelings and ideas. Art Psychotherapists work with a wide range of clients with emotional and behavioural problems, learning or physical difficulties, life-limiting conditions, neurological and mental health conditions and physical illnesses. It is a registered health profession, regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council and represented by the British Association of Art Therapists (BAAT). More information about Art Psychotherapy can be found on the link below.

The artists are: Ceinwen Birrell, Karina Burt, Ali Coles, Harriet Cookson, Hilary Forbes, Justine Glynne Jones, Fiona Harrison, Gill Horne, Louise Luscombe, Tempe Stuart and Saira Todd. Art Psychotherapists often have arts degrees as well as a postgraduate training in Art Psychotherapy, and personal art-making is an important part of their on-going professional development.
