DOMINIC CLARE - Exhibition
9 JAN - 14 FEB 2018
Our first exhibition of 2018 welcomes the evocative sculptural dreamscape of Dominic Clare - a scorched and blasted otherworld of carved wood, large faces and strange curiosities.
His work is inspired by ancient art and ritual, often referencing Ethiopia; the artist’s birthplace. Working with chainsaw and hand-carving tools, he uses fire to blast and burn the wood, revealing the grain by blowing away the softer summer growth. Burning transforms the wood, charred or polished like black marble.
Clare was born in Addis Ababa in1963 and gained a degree in Fine Art at Leeds Polytechnic before working as assistant to the sculptor David Nash. A four-year sojourn at Bristol Sculpture Shed led to a move to Snowdonia where he worked mainly on large-scale site-specific commissions and residencies for public places.
He has recently relocated to a larger studio in Slaughterford near Corsham, where he has renovated a former scrapyard in the Cotswold countryside and is making new works for commission and exhibition.
Dominic’s unique sculptures and furniture are suitable for inside and outside. His Slaughterford studio gallery is open on the third Sunday of each month.
