London-based maker Shannon Clegg is designer and part-time educator who works across a broad range of craft-based materials and processes to create products, furniture and objects. She originally hails from Cape Town where she trained as a tailor. Her love for making things and wanting to learn more is what motivated her to travel to London in her early twenties. She went on to study at Falmouth University of the Arts and has recently completed a Masters in Product and Furniture Design at Kingston University, London. Her practice investigates the narrative potential of making to encourage a better human-nature relationship through the utilisation and reimagining of traditional craft skills.
She accomplishes this by researching and responding to aspects of sustainability with new materials and process. Shannon works across materials to include clay, glass, wood and recently flowers. For her exhibition with Prema, Shannon will focus on her body of work “Bouquet” which started with a scruffy old wooden flower press abandoned at a Wimbledon car boot sale. The lucky find was pocketed and rehomed in her London studio where it was deconstructed to explore a new way of working the traditional 2D craft technique of pressing flowers. The unique hand moulding process enables flowers to be pressed into a variety of 3D vase like forms that can be displayed as a centre piece - no need for watering! This series of pressings looks to biophillic design, which reflects the human desire to connect with nature. Bouquet offers an extended experience of the traditional bouquet that normally lasts 10 days. Each pressing is a one off and has a life span of 12+ months.
