Methods of Making: Exhibition of Furniture Making
Saturday 6 January – Sunday 11 March 2018
Open Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm; Sun (from 1 February) 10am-4pm
Early in 2018, New Brewery Arts will house an exhibition of British furniture which brings together eight contemporary British designers and explores the different materials, concepts and making processes used in contemporary furniture today.
Methods of Making will examine a variety of modern day issues such as recycling, waste, economics, architecture, beauty, value and sustainability through an extraordinary showcase of some of Britain’s best craftsmanship.
Exhibiting the breadth of talent working in the UK today, eight designers who challenge social and economic issues have been selected. These include rising star Sebastian Cox, masters of the field Jim Partridge & Liz Walmsley, Edward Teasdale and David Gates, artists working with modern technologies in a variety of pioneering ways Gareth Neal, Jay Watson and Ben Huggins, and traditional wood carver Nicola Henshaw.
Sebastian Cox prides himself on using environmentally friendly methods and is dedicated to sustainability in design. Devoted to minimising waste in his making, he uses hardwoods local to his studio, and even his packaging is made from recycled materials.
"It’s crucial that sustainability is a conversation that doesn’t fade in the world of product design."
Furniture pioneer Gareth Neal also works to strict principles, pushing the boundaries with the materials he uses and gaining a name for himself through his innovative approach to design and sustainability.
“My designs endeavour to adhere to these principles and create lifelong relationships for a more sustainable future.”
Alongside the furniture itself, Methods of Making will also show eight specially commissioned films that shed light upon the artists’ studios, by demonstrating their unique use of conventional hand crafting techniques alongside modern technologies. The films, made in collaboration with the University of Lincoln, capture the artists’ ways of working, thinking, planning and construction as well as the environments that they create in.
Exhibition events will include a tour of the exhibition with Beth Alden, CEO of New Brewery Arts, and an artist’s talk by Jay Watson, whose inventive designs reference a concern for the environment; he explores contemporary innovation in technology and reuses surplus resources, re-imagining them as everyday utilitarian objects. As well as this, relevant workshops will run alongside the exhibition.
Methods of Making is an exploration of contemporary furniture design and the artists behind it. The exhibition will open at New Brewery Arts on Saturday 6 January and runs until Sunday 11 March 2018, Mon-Sat, 9am-5pm; Sun 10am-4pm
