Retro Pop Quiz - in aid of Mayor of Cheltenham's Charity

Cheltenham

Dates: 22/01/2022

Venue: Cheltenham Town Hall

Massive ‘Retro’ Pop Quiz raising money for Cheltenham Samaritans

Cheltenham Town Hall is the venue, Saturday 22nd January is the date, Popular music from the 50’s through the 90’s is the theme and raising money for charity is the aim.
After a hiatus of 20 years, the Friends of Cheltenham Samaritans, nominated as this year’s Cheltenham Mayor’s Charity, are presenting a one-off, large-scale, ‘Retro Pop Quiz’ in commemoration of the many huge quizzes that they presented in and around Cheltenham through the 80’s, 90’s and early Noughties.

People who attended those original quizzes still talk about them after all these years and original quiz master Leigh Norwood has spent the last couple of months putting together a ‘Greatest Hits’ package, featuring new versions of all of the best and most loved rounds from those early events.

As well as celebrating nearly 43 years of fundraising for the Friends group, the aim of the evening and indeed a whole host of other events planned around this year’s Cheltenham Mayor’s tenure, is to raise much needed funds for a local service that has been so vital to Cheltenham and the surrounding areas over the last two, very testing, years. We are hoping to get between 30 and 45 teams to come along on the evening to compete for an amazing £300 first prize.

The entrance fee is £60 for a team of six – at £10/head that seems like a reasonable price to pay for a one-off, incredible evening out supporting an equally incredible charity.
This event will appeal not only to those people and teams who enjoyed our quizzes back in the Eighties, Nineties and Noughties, but any other music and quiz fans who would enjoy an evening of great entertainment whilst supporting a very worthy cause.

Teams can be booked in via the Mayor’s Charities web site here:

Don’t forget to have a team name decided before you book.

Background information:
The Friends of Cheltenham Samaritans were formed in March 1979 and for nearly 43 years have been finding innovative and ‘fun’ ways to raise money for the local branch raising over £320,000 for the branch in the process. Highlight events included two “It’s a Knockout’s” at the Prince of Wales Stadium in the late 80’s, three “Dragon Boat racing” events at Pittville park between 2003 and 2005 and the ever popular annual “Cheltenham Craft Beer and Cider Festival” held at the Old Patesians Rugby Club every year since 2006 (until the advent of Covid-19 that is!).

Some of the most enjoyable and best remembered events, however, were a run of twenty large scale Pop Quiz’s held at various venues in and around Cheltenham between 1988 and 2002. Teams came from all over the Southwest and Midlands to test their music knowledge, often with more than 300 people in attendance.

In 2021/22, the Friends have been selected by Cheltenham Mayor, Councillor Steve Harvey, to be the nominated Mayor’s Charity during his year in office.
