Franz Schubert Allegretto in c, D. 915
Josef Haydn Sonata in E flat, Hob. XVI/49
Franz Liszt Bénédiction de Dieu dans la solitude

Ludwig van Beethoven33 Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli, opus 120

Beethoven’s Diabelli Variations undoubtedly deserves its place in James Lisney’s acclaimed Masterwork’s series, being variously referred to as “the greatest set of variations ever written” (Donald Tovey); “the greatest of all piano works” (Alfred Brendel); and “a microcosm of Beethoven’s art” (Hans von Bulow).

Liszt’s Bénédiction is the work that the composer most often played for guests and colleagues; it is a radiant and uplifting meditation that never fails to move. Schubert’s gentle Allegretto is a miniature and valedictory masterpiece that he gifted to a friend, providing the perfect prelude for Haydn’s witty and satisfying Sonata in E flat.

“I have nothing but praise for James Lisney’s piano playing; he combines velvet touch and wide range of colour with complete understanding of phrasing and dynamic shading. This is someone who can really give the mechanical box of wires and wood a singing soul.”
The Telegraph

“One could describe James Lisney by repeating Goethe’s words about Beethoven: ‘A more self-contained energetic, sincere artist I never saw’.”
