Young Parents Group Starts in Dursley
- New group for young parents starting in Dursley
- Organised by The Door Youth Project in partnership with Barnardos
- Open to all young parents aged up to 25 years with bumps, babies and toddlers
Parenthood; such a privilege and honour to be able to bring new life into the world... this might have happened for you recently, more years ago than you care to remember or maybe you are even still waiting.
While for many becoming a parent is the most incredibly exciting, wonderful and rewarding life event ever, for numerous young and single parents, these words couldn’t be further from the truth. For them their experience can sometimes be scary, lonely and a day to day struggle. Being a parent and under 25 can be really tough and one of the most isolating and challenging experiences ever.
This is our experience at The Door where we have regular contact with young parents who are feeling just like this and we wanted to help, so how did we respond? Two years ago we established a support group for parents with their toddlers to come, to meet new friends, to share ideas and struggles, reducing isolation and increasing their confidence in parenting. Known as ADOORables, this group proved to be so beneficial that it soon became jointly hosted with Parliament Children’s Centre who were able to use the group for young mums who had approached them for support.
Two years on and the group is still going strong in Stroud. The Door are especially delighted to be continuing to host this group in Stroud in association with Barnardos as part of their management of the children centre contract in Stroud and Dursley.
The Door and Barnardos are proving to be a great team, combining respective specialisms in the support of both parents and their toddlers and due to the success of the established group in Stroud, The Door are delighted, that with the generous support of Dursley Town Council, a new ADOORable group is being set up especially for young parents in Cam and Dursley at The Vibe youth centre in Dursley centre.
This free group is for any young parent under 25 who would appreciate some peer support and professional input and advice. Initially it will be running for 6 weeks on Fridays. Its first session will be on Friday 22nd September 10am – 12pm, with free tea, coffee, juice and a snack for all. If you think you might benefit from this great free facility then why not go along on the 22nd to find out more.
