Tewkesbury friends and family ‘stomp out cancer’ in memory of Glenda

Venue: Tewkesbury Rugby Football Club

A group of 30 friends and family are coming together on Saturday 18th September to ‘stomp out cancer’ in memory of much loved Tewkesbury mum, Glenda Hill, raising funds for a local hospice.

After stomping up Bredon Hill in a 7km hike to Bredon Tower and back, the group will head onto a family fun day at Tewkesbury Rugby Club with food stalls, face painting, bouncy castle and charity raffle – followed by an evening of more ‘stomping’ on the dance floor to the beats of Northern Soul, Ska and reggae music and 50s traditional Rockability to Neo Rockabilty from three-piece band The Delray Rockets.

Glenda’s ex-Tewkesbury Rugby Football Club team mates, Jo Woodfield and Teri Watkins, have been working hard with Glenda’s daughter, Emma Hill, to put on the family friendly fundraiser in support of Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, which cared for Glenda in 2019.

Glenda was well-known in Tewkesbury, having played for Tewkesbury Rugby Football Club for ten years, and was a passionate fundraiser for the Meningitis Trust after her youngest daughter, Levana, had her legs amputated as a baby after contacting meningitis.

Jo said, “Glenda was larger than life and was all about family. She loved life, had her own sense of humour and she loved us all getting together. I think she’d be chuffed to see old team mates, friends and family coming together to do this in memory of her and support the charity which cared for her.

“Glenda did an awful lot of charity work, and we’ve chosen to walk up to the tower at Bredon Hill as it was such a special place to Glenda after she did a lot of training up there before she climbed the Great Wall of China as part of her fundraising.”

“When we get to the top we will stop and remember Glenda, the amazing person she was and the amazing things she did, and take a big group photo.”

Glenda was cared for by Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in August 2019.

Jo added, “After Glenda was diagnosed with a brain tumour things went downhill really quickly. First she received care at home, then at Tewkesbury Community Hospital and then when she needed more specialist palliative care she was transferred to Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice.

“The care given to Glenda and her family really was the best of the best and the family can’t speak highly enough of Sue Ryder.”

Glenda’s daughter, Emma, added, “Mum spent her final weeks at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice and I cannot even put into words how amazing a place it is. The staff are incredible and they deserve every single penny we can raise for them.

“This is such a fantastic cause and I know Sue Ryder has touched the hearts of so many. We hope the people of Tewkesbury will get behind us and donate towards our Bredon Hill walk or come join us at our family fun day afterwards at Tewkesbury Rugby Club, which is open to all. Every single penny counts and I for one will be so grateful for everyone’s support. I would especially like to thank all family, friends and companies that have donated so generously to our charity raffle too.”

“We’re all really looking forward to getting together and raising as much money as we can in memory of mum.”

The family fun day on Saturday 18th September from 3pm till late at Tewkesbury Rugby Club, The Moats, Gander Lane is free for all to attend. There will be music and tasty treats on offer from a number of delicious food stalls including Woody’s Wood Fired Pizza and Tasty Thai and for kids and the young at heart a bouncy castle and face painting too. This will be followed by a reggae and soul disco.

A charity raffle will be drawn at 7pm, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs including a two night stay at St Weonards Hotel in Paignton in Devon, an overnight pod stay at Croft Farm just outside Tewkesbury, a family climbing session at Gloucester Climbing Warehouse, Sherdons Adventure Gold voucher for a family of 4, and Cotswold Wildlife Park tickets and many more treats and trips out. Tickets cost £1 or £5 for a book and are available to purchase by emailing
