GloucesterMuseum of Gloucester and History, Her Story, Their Story, Our Story Exhibition admission
(Admission anytime from 10.00am - 16.30 Tuesday - Saturdays, 11.00 - 15.30 Sundays. (Closed Mondays).
Inspired by renowned photographer Vanley Burke, this exhibition shows work from well renowned Gloucester artists who have worked with the community, using the lead question "When was the first time you saw a person of a different ethnicity to you?" as their stimulus. School pupils were also encouraged to ask the oldest person they know the question…The stories gathered were explored in workshops that took place between the pupils and the artists. With mentoring from Mr Burke, the artists have responded creatively to the stories that they were told from the pupils. The exhibition also features Elle Bry Thomas with her ‘Barber Street’ exhibition. This photography series celebrates 14 of the barber shops of Barton Street in the centre of Gloucester. One Street, Fourteen Barbers, Many Nationalities.
The Museum tells the story of the city’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. This fine Victorian building also has a significant collection of art including paintings by Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Thomas Dibdin.
The Archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. The Museum has ever-changing exhibitions and events, so keep your eyes open for these when visiting.
The Museum also features ground floor exhibitions and exhibits that promise a much more interactive experience. Highlights include a Roman kitchen playhouse and medieval street and part of the original Roman wall can also be viewed within the museum.
