Rare Plant Fair at Rodmarton Manor.

The beautiful gardens at Rodmarton Manor play host to a Rare Plant Fair on Sunday, June 23rd 2019.

Rodmarton  Manor  is  an  Arts  and  Crafts  house  designed  and  built  in  the  early  20th  Century  for  Claud  and  Margaret  Biddulph.  The  architect,  Ernest  Barnsley,  not  only  designed  the  house  but  also  laid  out  the  garden.  Barnsley  had  moved  to  nearby  Sapperton  in  the  late  1800's,  along  with  his  brother  Sidney  and  colleague  Earnest  Gimson.  There  they  set  up  workshops  following  the  ideals  of  hand  craftsmanship  and  local  materials.  Whilst  Ernest  Barnsley  was  the  architect,  Sidney  made  much  of  the  furniture  and  many  fittings  for  the  house.  Visitors  to  the  garden  today  will  still  see  Barnsley's  original  layout. 

The  overall  design,  to  the  south  and  west  of  the  house,  is  for  a  declining  formality  the  further  one  gets  away  from  the  house.  Immediately  to  the  south  is  the  terrace  with  topiary,  adjoining  which  is  the  winter  garden  with  further  topiary  and  pleached  lime  trees.  Beyond  these  areas  are  the  white  border  to  the  south  and  main  herbaceous  borders  to  the  west.  Further  to  the  south  is  the  daffodil  paddock  and  farmland  beyond,  whilst  the  westernmost  area  is  the  Wild  Garden,  which  is  more  woodland  in  style. 

This  year  Rare  Plant  Fairs  celebrate  their  25th  season.  All  our  events  are  held  in  beautiful  and  prestigious  gardens,  each  with  its  own  unique  character,  from  those  with histories  stretching  back  centuries  to  more  modern  gardens  created  in  recent  years.  A  day  out  at  one  of  our  fairs  a  really  enjoyable  and  inspiring  experience  for  everyone,  whether  a  novice  or  experienced  gardener. 

The  nurseries  that  attend  our  Fairs  are  carefully  selected  to  ensure  that  they  are  genuine  growers  who  produce  most  or  all  of  the  plants  that  they  sell  themselves.  We  try  offer  the  widest  possible  range  of  plants  to  our  visitors,  including  perennials,  shrubs  and  trees,  alpines,  bulbs  and  exotic  plants,  and  all  of  our  nursery  owners  are  experts  in  the  plants  that  they  grow.  They  are  all  always  happy  to  offer  all  the  advice  that  you  need  to  select  and  grow  the  right  plants  for  your  garden.

The  fair  will  be  open  from  11am  to  4pm,  and  adult  entry  to  the  fair  and  garden  is  just  £5.  Refreshments  are  available.
