We are delighted to welcome visitors back to the Museum of Gloucester!The Museum tells the story of the city’s origins as a Roman settlement and its subsequent development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. This fine Victorian building also has a significant collection of art including paintings by Richard Wilson, Thomas Gainsborough, John Atkinson Grimshaw and Thomas Dibdin.

The Archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world. The Museum has ever-changing exhibitions and events, so keep your eyes open for these when visiting.

The Museum also features ground floor exhibitions and exhibits that promise a much more interactive experience. Highlights include a Roman kitchen playhouse and medieval street and part of the original Roman wall can also be viewed within the museum.

Safety Information

Please note that as per government guidelines:
All visitors aged sixteen or over are required to leave contact details as part of the NHS test and trace service. These details are confidentially destroyed after 21 days following our strict GDPR policy.

The wearing of face masks is mandatory throughout the Museum and Tourist Information Centre unless an individual is exempt from the rule or sat using the café service.
There are multiple hand sanitiser stations throughout the building and all visitors are encouraged to make regular use of them.

Our bookings are running at a reduced capacity to allow for social distancing take place. We therefore ask all visitors to adhere to social distancing and be mindful of other visitors when making their way through the galleries.
