‘Tolkien and the Cotswolds – the Shaping of Middle Earth’

Tewkesbury

Dates: 09/08/2025

Venue: Old Baptist Chapel

Gloucestershire and the surrounding area played a significant role in JRR Tolkien’s personal and literary life. His wife, Edith, was born in Gloucester and their first child was born in a nursing home in Cheltenham. The Gloucestershire landscape through which he drove to visit his brother Hilary in Evesham, was to provide much of the inspiration for Middle Earth. During the talk, we also learn of Tolkien’s involvement in the discovery of a ring with supposed magical powers at Lydney Park in the Forest of Dean!
