There's still time to catch our exhibition of artwork by Cedric Titcombe before it ends on 21st January. Cedric was born in 1940 in Clarence Street Maternity Hospital, Gloucester and spent most of his creative life chronicling the city and its inhabitants. He grew up in Clapham, Kingsholm until his family were rehoused in White City after the war.
At the Crypt School he was a legend for his artistic skills and he went on to study at Gloucester School of Art. His tutor was John Whiskerd, who created the controversial Family Group sculpture. Ced helped him put it up. After college he lived in different parts of the British Isles. When he returned to Gloucester he rented a flat above TG Hall’s bike shop in Barton Street (now Eastgate Street). Eventually he settled in Priory Road, Westgate. He died in the summer of 2022.
Throughout Ced’s life he continued to draw, paint, sculpt and make prints, his work full of energy and a singular vision. If you attended art classes at Oakbank open air school, Oxstalls community school, Newent Arts, Gloscat or the Guildhall you may have been taught by Cedric. If you remember the Semington you’ll have seen his posters and barge painting. He ran a community print shop for the Courtyard Arts Trust in the 80s, he carved heads – one of them his own - for the stone bench in St Mary de Crypt churchyard and carved a tombstone for a friend. Despite his absolute mastery of the pencil and charcoal stick he embraced new technologies as they came along. He made a video for a Cattle Market project, he used an iPad to create a series of prints.
The work exhibited is just a tiny selection of his output, much of it has been sold or given away. Everything without a green sticker is for sale.
