You butter believe it! Bristol care chef shortlisted for prestigious accolade
Bristol
A care home in Bristol is celebrating after one of its chefs has been nominated for an award.
Darren Nelson, Head Chef at Trymview Hall on Southmead Road, has been shortlisted for the Chef Award in the Care and Support West Care Awards 2026.
The Chef Award recognises culinary professionals in the South West who go above and beyond to provide delightful and personalised food experiences for older people.
Darren, who has years of experience in restaurants and was previously executive chef for the Royal British Legion, joined Trymview Hall in 2019 and is one of the first people residents and their families meet at the home. He listens not only to residents’ dietary requirements but their preferences as well, which are passed on to the home’s team members.
He also works closely with local suppliers to ensure his seasonal menus contain fresh produce, which is supplemented by fruit, vegetables and herbs grown by residents in the home’s own gardens.
One centenarian resident at the home puts his longevity down to his love of beetroot and Darren took the opportunity to celebrate this for the resident’s 100th birthday with an entire beetroot-themed menu, including an innovative beetroot terrine.
Darren said: “I’m over the moon to be shortlisted for this award! I’m so passionate about making food personal, whether that’s through a favourite dish, a shared memory or simply something that makes someone smile.
“Trymview Hall wouldn’t be the same without the wonderful residents, and I’m so happy my cooking plays such an important and fun part in their lives here.”
Darren takes particular pride in cooking meals that form a nutrient-dense, healthy and balanced diet that allows them to live active and fulfilling lives. He enjoys getting residents’ opinions, so offers show plates and grazing menus to help them choose their preferred meals.
Nicole Anderson, Home Manager at Trymview Hall, said: “We’re thrilled that Darren has been shortlisted for an award that recognises his culinary ability and person-centred approach to food at Trymview Hall.
“Darren and his expert kitchen team make such a positive impact on residents at the home, cooking them delicious and nutritious meals that cater to their preferences. We’re so proud of the hard work they put in every day.
“We’ll all be keeping our fingers crossed for a win later this year!”
The Care and Support West Care Awards will take place on Thursday 1 October at Ashton Gate Stadium, home to Bristol City Football Club and Bristol Bears.
Trymview Hall is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, dementia and short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
