Sue Ryder and Gloucestershire Libraries encourage open conversations for Dying Matters Awareness Wee

Sue Ryder is partnering with Gloucestershire Libraries this May to mark Dying Matters Awareness Week (5-11 May), a national initiative encouraging communities across the UK to have open conversations about death and dying.

This year’s theme, The Culture of Dying Matters, provides an opportunity to break down barriers and tackle these often-challenging discussions.

 

Cheltenham Library on 8 May and Quedgeley Library on 9 May will host events supported by Gloucestershire Registration Service and Sue Ryder. These drop-in sessions are open to everyone - no booking is required.
Visitors will have the chance to chat informally with Registrars, who can provide insight into what happens when a death needs to be registered, easing concerns and demystifying the process. Sue Ryder representatives will also be present to share information about the support services available, offering reassurance to those navigating these difficult times.

Beverley Grimster, Community Engagement Coordinator at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham, shares: “Dying Matters Awareness Week shines a light on the importance of open conversations about death and dying, which can feel daunting but are really important for individuals and communities alike.

“This year’s theme, 'The Culture of Dying Matters,' encourages us to reflect on how we approach these topics and embrace the opportunity to share, learn, and support one another. We hope these events at Cheltenham and Quedgeley will create a safe, open space where conversations about death and dying are normalised. Together, we can build a culture of understanding and support during life’s most challenging moments.”
