Sue Ryder announces cancellation of this year’s Ride for Ryder
Southsea
Sue Ryder has announced today the cancellation of this year’s Ride for Ryder, the charity’s popular Cotswolds cycling event.
The palliative care and bereavement charity said the difficult decision to cancel this year’s charity cycle due to take place on 12 July was made after carefully reviewing what is needed to deliver the event safely and to the high standards participants expect.
Following a review of operations, resources and health and safety requirements, the charity decided it could not run the event safely to the high standard riders, volunteers and supporters deserve, and had made the decision to cancel to give cyclists as much advance notice as possible.
Regional Fundraising Manager, Fern Pilutkiewicz, said: “Ride for Ryder has been a cherished part of our community for nearly four decades, and we know this news will be incredibly disappointing for the many riders, volunteers and supporters who have been part of it over the years.
“This was not an easy decision, and we are sorry for the impact to anyone who takes part or supports the event, but we have a responsibility to keep everyone safe. We are incredibly proud of everything this event has achieved and want to thank everyone who has supported it and helped make it so special.
“We hope supporters will continue to get behind Sue Ryder in other ways this year, including by taking on one of the fantastic local cycling events such as the Hell of the North Cotswolds or the Cotswolds Sportive 100, or by fundraising in their own way.”
Since it first began, Ride for Ryder has inspired thousands of cyclists to take part, raising significant funds to support Sue Ryder’s expert palliative, end of life and bereavement services.
The charity is getting in touch with registered participants about a refund and signposting them to alternative Cotswolds cycling events including the Hell of the North Cotswolds and Cotswolds Sportive 100 organised by UK Velo.
Jim Davies, Lead Organiser at Hell of the North Cotsworlds, said: "We are happy to welcome cyclists raising funds for Sue Ryder and hope to see you at Sudeley Castle Estate in September."
James Stone, from UK Velo also said: “We’re delighted to welcome cyclists supporting Sue Ryder and look forward to seeing you in Cheltenham this May.”
