As Young People Make Their Next Move, Cheltenham Town Offers a Unique Route Into Football and Sport

Cheltenham

Venue: Cheltenham Town Football Club

With many school and college leavers considering their next steps, Cheltenham Town Community Trust is offering an alternative to traditional university routes: a hands on football coaching degree delivered in partnership with the University of South Wales and EFL in the Community.

The Foundation Degree in Community Football Coaching and Development is a two year course designed for those who want to build a career in sport, youth work or community development. The programme combines online academic learning with real life experience coaching in schools, holiday camps and outreach projects, all through Cheltenham Town Community Trust, the official charity of Cheltenham Town FC.

At this time of year, as young people make crucial decisions about their futures, the degree offers something different: a chance to study while gaining professional experience in the world of football.

“It’s more than just a qualification. It’s a gateway into the sport and education industry,” says Dec Horsfall, Community Coach and USW Mentor at Cheltenham Town Community Trust. “Our students are out in the community making a difference while developing the leadership, communication and coaching skills that set them up for long term careers.”

Current student Nuno Santos, 18, moved to the UK from Portugal and says the course has had a huge impact on him:
“Before I joined, I didn’t know many people and struggled with confidence. Now I’m part of a team, improving my coaching and feeling positive about the future. It’s been supportive, empowering and fun.”

Students cover modules such as youth coaching, football development, social inclusion and sports management. The course also includes up to 200 hours of practical coaching and optional progression to a full Honours degree in the third year.

With a dedicated classroom at Cheltenham Town’s stadium and full student status with the University of South Wales, including access to digital resources, tutor support and residential study weeks at the university campus, the degree offers the best of both academic and vocational learning.
