REVIEW: Pride & Prejudice* (*Sort Of) at the Everyman Theatre Cheltenham

Cheltenham

“It is a truth universally acknowledged” that Pride & Prejudice is one of Jane Austen’s most celebrated and enduring novels. Now staged in musical form by talented directors Isobel McArthur and Simon Harvey, dedicated readers will not want to miss this delightful and *sort of faithful adaptation of the beloved book.

Having already won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy, Pride & Prejudice (*Sort Of) is taking a victory lap of theatres outside the West End, and Cheltenham is lucky enough to host the talented cast and crew.

As we stepped into the theatre, we were delighted to see a stage decorated with Regency décor that fitted in nicely with the gorgeous Everyman Theatre. The actresses were busy cleaning the place up, having a laugh with the audience to set the tone for the evening.

Told from the perspective of five female servants in the characters’ households, the beloved characters of Austen’s novel were brought to life by the extremely talented cast, and the fun they were having on stage was apparent and kept the energy up throughout the performance.

The all-female cast of five were all exceptional. Each actress had a number of roles to play, with Dannie Harris putting on a extravagant Mrs Bennet one moment and morphing into the arrogant Mr Darcy the next. Particularly the dreary Mr Collins had the audience rolling in their seats as the actress attempted to munch on Lady Catherine's feathered hat. Playing a number of parts certainly allowed the actresses to show off their impressive range and comedy skills.

With brilliant direction and some well-picked contemporary songs that complemented the characters and setting surprisingly well, even the most prideful audience member will be won over by this handsome, heartfelt, and hilarious performance.

We highly recommend Pride & Prejudice* (*Sort Of), running from 6th to 11th March at the Everyman Theatre. Book your tickets now HERE!
