Museum Walk – Battle of Evesham (1265)

Join us on a Battle of Evesham walk, as we uncover the tactics and characters involved in this historic clash. The Battle of Evesham (4 August 1265) was one of the two main battles of 13th century England’s Second Barons’ War. It marked the defeat of Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, and the rebellious barons by the future King Edward I, who led the forces of his father, King Henry III.

After the walk, members of staff will be heading to the Orto Lounge for lunch, so you are welcome to join us!

After the lunch break, there will be a guided tour of the Almonry Museum and St Lawrence’s Church, which will last approximately 2 hours. People are free to explore the museum at their own leisure if they would prefer. The Almonry museum has four items in the collection that link to the battle: an axe head, a skull and a sword as well as the Evesham Psalter which would have been in the Abbey during the time of the battle. There will be a handling session with replica arms and armour discussing mid-13th century tactics, followed by a tour of the museum focusing on the aforementioned battle relating objects.

St Lawrence’s Church is contemporary to the battle, and was likely being used as the Abbots private chapel in the 13th Century. By 1265, however, Evesham was Abbotless and being looked after by the Bishop of Worcester, so the chapel likely would have played host to Simon and his immediate advisers.
