Emma Thompson is superb in this gripping thriller as an ageing widow who stumbles across a kidnapping while travelling through the snowy wastes of Minnesota. Discovering a young girl being held captive by a ruthless husband and wife in the cellar of a remote cottage, she calls upon deep wells of resourcefulness to try to set her free. Events escalate, however, leading to a white-knuckle game of cat-and-mouse between the kidnappers and our plucky heroine.
Director Brian Kirk (21 Bridges, Luther, The Day of the Jackal) orchestrates the build-up of tension skilfully, while slowly revealing the backstories of his characters: the couple (Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca) who've turned to crime for personal, desperate reasons, and Thompson's layered portrayal of a woman still mourning the loss of the love of her life. With comparatively little dialogue, the latter walks a perfectly paced line between heartbreak and pragmatism that stays with the viewer long after the credits have rolled. The location and kidnap premise may invite parallels with the Oscar-winning Fargo, but this is in some ways a more serious, thought-provoking affair.
