A small fishing boat, the Rose of Nevada mysteriously appears, unmanned, in the harbour of a present-day, run-down Cornish village 30 years since it, and its crew, went missing in a heavy storm. The boat’s disappearance coincided with the collapse of the local economy, and the villagers see its return as an omen. A new crew is assembled — financially desperate family man Nick (George MacKay), on-the-run drifter Liam (Callum Turner), and a mysterious, salty sea-dog of a skipper (Francis Magee) — and the trio set off to bring in a haul intended to end three decades of stagnation. But when they return with a boat full of fish, they find the town seems fuller, livelier, the pub looks in better shape and allows smoking indoors. The awful truth is that they have gone back in time to 1993, and everyone in town thinks that Nick and Liam are the two men who vanished in the original crew...
Mark Jenkin's films have the texture of early cinema updated to the present day, shot on 16mm, developed by hand, he directs, shoots, edits, composes the score and designs the sound himself, as well as operating the camera, creating a remarkable drama that almost feels like a remembered dream...
