Having a ball: Bristol care home residents go head-to-head for matchday magic

Football fever has officially kicked off for a group of Bristol care home residents as they hit the road for an afternoon of sporting fun.
Residents from Care UK’s Ladden View, in Yate, boarded the bus to Westbury-on-Trym to face Trymview Hall for a friendly football-themed get-together, complete with a highly anticipated penalty shootout and bags of team spirit.
The homes joined thousands in celebrating the current World Cup fever and the afternoon provided a perfect opportunity for residents from both care homes to share their love for the beautiful game.
Residents from each home were decked out in red and blue football kits, kindly provided by Trymview Hall team members. The event’s highlight was a lively penalty shootout; although both homes gave their all to claim bragging rights at the end of the afternoon, it was Ladden View who emerged victorious at the final whistle.
Trymview Hall resident Patrick Edwards said: “I really enjoyed the penalty shootout, it brought back memories of the 1966 World Cup and reminded me why I never became a professional footballer!
“It was actually my first ever penalty shootout, and I had great fun taking part. I can't wait for the next one.”
From the winning team at Ladden View, Alan Alford added: “I was very happy to score the winning goal, and it's been years since I have played football.
“I used to love the football, and had an opportunity to play professionally, but never mind!"
The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Goal-den Moments' initiative, which aims to bring generations together, encouraging residents to reminisce about cherished football memories and create new experiences together.

For many residents, football is more than just the beautiful game – it represents a lifetime of treasured memories and traditions. This event allowed us to honour these special moments and bring them to life once again.
