Two peas in a pod – Westbury-on-Trym couple celebrate seven decades of marriage

An inseparable Westbury-on-Trym couple have celebrated a remarkable milestone – and shared their advice for a long and successful marriage.

Grayham and June Riddell, who live at Care UK’s Trymview Hall on Southmead Road, were surprised with a replica of their wedding cake by the care home team to toast their 70th wedding anniversary.

The recreated cake, specially prepared by the home’s head chef, was a two-tier sponge cake with marzipan and fondant. The celebration gave the pair the opportunity to share their secret to a long and happy marriage: “Supporting each other through difficult times and through fun times.”

The happy couple are both Bristolians through and through, with Grayham born in Horfield in 1932 and June in Clifton in 1932. They met through family, when Grayham’s sister married June’s brother, and it was “near enough” love at first sight.

Soon after, Grayham invited her to go on their first date: a trip to Brean Down, Somerset, which June described as their most romantic date.

Reflecting on their early days together, June said: “Grayham was nice and polite; he was handsome.”

The pair married in 1946 in Filton Avenue and have been inseparable since.

“She’s amazing,” he said. “She’s always been a shining light in my life.”

When asked for their advice for young couples today, Grayham and June suggested: to be tolerant of each other, and to always be honest.

“Celebrating big milestones and making the day as special as possible for residents is really important to us here at Trymview Hall. We know just how much the memory of their wedding day means to June and Grayham, which is why we decided to take them on trip down memory lane by recreating their wedding cake. Their reaction when we unveiled it made all the chef’s hard work completely worth it!

“It was truly a privilege to listen to the memories and wisdom June and Grayham shared with us; happy 70th anniversary to you both!”

Trymview Hall is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, dementia and short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
