Established this year, FilmChelt is a non-profit, charitable organisation hosting an exciting programme of films and events for its festival running from Saturday 18 October to Sunday 26 October 2025.

The FilmChelt team brings together individuals with a wealth of experience and passion for film making, moving image and cinema, following many years of hosting and delivering previous film festivals and events for Cheltenham.

The new Cheltenham film festival will promote and support independent films and ensure that the film industry has a unique festival. Set up this year, the new charitable organisation FilmChelt, will take the film festival forward in a new direction and with this new team.

Michael Ratcliffe, chair of the board of trustees, said: “We are delighted to announce FilmChelt, Cheltenham’s new independent film festival for film lovers everywhere.

“We’ll be revealing more details about the programme for this October’s festival over the coming weeks. Starting with a musical gala evening during September, ‘Echo of the Oscars’, celebrating the magic and power of music in film.

“Tickets for this special event are now on sale through our website at www.filmchelt.org so do come and join us and be part of FilmChelt.”

The 2025 festival launches with Echoes of the Oscars, an inspiring gala concert of live music, performed by the renowned 70-piece The Film Orchestra, TfO, being held on Saturday 20 September.

The importance music plays in film and the impact musical scores have on audiences’ enjoyment of movies is widely recognised with awards at the Academy Awards for best original song and best original score.

The gala event brings an evening of Oscar winning and nominated film music where the best of cinema meets the grandeur of live orchestral performance against the splendid backdrop of Princess Hall at Cheltenham Ladies College.

The programme features iconic soundtracks and composition from some of the most beloved and celebrated films. Among those composers being celebrated are multi-Oscar winner John Williams who won the Oscar with his score for Schindler’s List in 1994; ET in 1983 and for Star Wars Episode IV in 1978; Ennio Morricone who won with the score for The Hateful Eight in 2016, and Hans Zimmer who won in 1995 with the score for The Lion King and Dune in 2022.

Tickets are now on sale for this exciting gala event and can be booked at https://filmchelt.org/2025/05/15/echoes-of-the-oscars/
