Roll with it – Dursley Care Home Residents Team up with local Brownies for friendly competition
Dursley
Venue: The Hollies Care Home
Residents at neighbouring care homes in Dursley enjoyed an afternoon of fun and friendly competition as a local youth group joined them to celebrate the simple joys of traditional games.
Care UK’s The Hollies and Holly Oak, on Drake Lane, teamed up with visitors from the 2nd Dursley Brownies to take part in a board game afternoon, bringing different generations together to rediscover the simple pleasure of playing traditional board games together.
Throughout the afternoon, residents and their competing rivals took part in a host of classic games, including Connect 4, Shut the Box, as well as a giant version of Snakes and Ladders, with plenty of friendly rivalry and laughter along the way.
- Jill, a resident at The Hollies, said: “What a delight it was to have the young Brownies visit our home. It was so lovely to have the children around. They were so much fun and had such energy and were very polite too. I played a game of dominoes with two of the girls - they won!”
The event was part of Care UK’s ‘Bored Games’ initiative – a nationwide campaign intended to revive the magic of family and community games nights. At a time when social media and online gaming have transformed how people spend their leisure time, the initiative is celebrating the simple joys of spending time together playing traditional board games and the memories they can create.
From community events and intergenerational activities, Care UK care homes across the UK are celebrating togetherness and reconnecting residents with the games that shaped their younger years.
Suzanne Tullett, Home Manager at The Hollies and Holly Oak, said: “We know how powerful games can be in bringing people together, creating opportunities for people of all ages to connect, and to share their favourite games and cherished memories.
“Whether it's discovering a new game, enjoying a bit of friendly competition or reminiscing about games played with friends and family, these moments help spark meaningful conversations, laughter and joy across generations.
“We’re delighted to have welcomed the 2nd Dursley Brownies and would love to thank them for helping to make the event such a wonderful occasion for everyone involved.”
