CPRE Project Restores 6km of Hedgerow Across Gloucestershire with Help from Over 400 Volunteers
Gloucestershire
Once again, volunteers came together this winter to plant and restore hedgerows across the county as part of CPRE Gloucestershire’s Hedgerow Heroes project.
During the most recent season, more than 160 volunteers helped plant and restore over 2 kilometres of hedgerow across nine sites in Gloucestershire. Volunteers included local residents, landowners, schools and community organisations, all working together to strengthen the county’s countryside.
This work forms part of the national Hedgerow Heroes Project from the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), which has been planting and restoring hedgerows across England since 2021. This winter marked CPRE Gloucestershire’s third project season, bringing the total length of hedgerow restored across the county to nearly 6km since 2023.
Hedgerows are an intrinsic part of England’s countryside. They help prevent soil erosion, store carbon, support wildlife and create vital corridors for biodiversity. Yet they remain under threat from poor management practices, inappropriate cutting, and removal for agriculture or development.
Often described as the stitching that holds together the patchwork beauty of the countryside, hedgerows are ancient boundaries that play a crucial role in tackling both the climate and nature crises. They also support sustainable farming by helping to manage livestock, improve soil health and provide shelter and food for pollinators and other wildlife.
To coincide with National Hedgerow Week, CPRE Gloucestershire has released a short film offering a behind‑the‑scenes look at volunteers working on-the-ground to plant and safeguard Gloucestershire’s hedgerows. The film captures a collaborative volunteering day with the team at Adam Henson’s Cotswold Farm Park and can be viewed on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lkXolI8ykDY
By restoring hedgerows through projects like Hedgerow Heroes, CPRE Gloucestershire is helping to protect biodiversity, enhance rural landscapes and support our countryside now and for future generations.
