Gloucestershire housebuilder trades construction for a day of gardening at local children’s charity
Gloucestershire
Venue: 123 Westward Rd, Stroud GL5 4SP
Team members from a Gloucestershire housebuilder dug deep to support a local children’s charity's sensory garden.
The team from a local housebuilder, Barratt Bristol, which is currently building at Winnycroft in Gloucestershire, traded building tools for garden trowels as they volunteered at James Hopkins Trust at Kites Corner to help maintain its sensory garden.
Since opening in 1989, Kites Corner has provided respite and support for infants and children up to six years old that live with life-limiting or threatening conditions and their families. Over three decades, the trust has helped over 700 children and their families, providing high standards of care, and creating fun and interactive environments for children to live in.
The sensory garden reflects the charity’s commitment to this – offering a relaxing and entertaining experience for children which has been proven to have positive effects on both physical and mental well-being.
On the day, nine Barratt Bristol team members rolled up their sleeves to clean the charity’s outdoor play equipment, de-weed and cut the grass in their garden, before ending the day jet washing the patio area. Since then, members of Barratt Bristol have returned to the charity to continue to build a lasting relationship.
Laura Brooker, Fundraiser at Kites Corner, said: “It was a pleasure to have two teams from Barratt Homes join us at Kite’s Corner for two days to help maintain our sensory garden. Both of the teams worked so hard, nothing was too much trouble!
The help the teams provided saved us approximately £1,150.00 in garden maintenance, allowing us to ensure the money we raise can be used where it is needed most, providing nursing respite care for the children.
We would like to give our heartfelt thanks to everyone from Barratt Homes who volunteered their time. The garden is looking lovely, and it is great to know that our children can enjoy being outside and playing safely.”
The team’s volunteering reflects Barratt’s long history of supporting local communities. As part of their community chest, the housebuilder donates £1,500 each month to local charities, helping to make a meaningful difference in the areas they build in. Barratt Bristol has also pledged to complete 100 volunteer days throughout 2026, reinforcing its hands-on approach to giving back to the community.
Richard Lawson, Sales Director at Barratt Bristol, said: “Supporting the local communities in which we build is a core value for everyone here at Barratt Bristol – and something we take great pride in as a team.
“We are proud to have a team that is always ready to get stuck into volunteering on days like this. Days like these not only allow us to give something back, but also help us build stronger connections with the communities around us.
“Kites Corner plays a truly vital role within the Gloucestershire community, providing invaluable care and support to children and their families. We’re delighted to have been able to lend a hand and support the incredible work they do.
“We had a brilliant time helping to refresh the sensory garden, and we hope that everyone who uses the space continues to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed being part of the effort to maintain it.”
