Mother & Daughter Create a Magical Wonderland in Newent's Newest Art Gallery

Newent

Venue: Charlotte Keating Art Gallery & Gift Shop

Charlotte and Béa invite you to beat the heat this summer by stepping into Wonderland, a magical new exhibition at Newent's newest contemporary art gallery.

Together they've created an enchanting collection of paintings, prints, ceramics, textiles and floral arrangements inspired by woodland wonders, whimsical storytelling, fleeting dreams and ancient legends.

Set within a charming Victorian courtyard that has recently enjoyed a vibrant lick of paint, Charlotte Keating Art Gallery & Gift Shop opened its doors in March and has quickly become known as the place to discover uplifting contemporary art, affordable original artwork and beautiful handmade gifts.

Every month brings a completely fresh exhibition centred around a different theme or colour palette, each launched with a relaxed opening evening featuring complimentary drinks, live music and the chance to meet some of the artists.

Visitors have already enjoyed Northern Shores, inspired by the coast; Flourish, celebrating spring florals; Glow Up!, bursting with playful neon colour; and the gallery's participation in the farOpen Art Trail. This latest exhibition, however, is particularly special for more than just the artwork.

Charlotte's daughter, Béa, is preparing to leave home this September to study Fashion at Falmouth University and Wonderland, is the final exhibition the pair have curated together before she begins her next adventure.

Béa said:
"I'm so proud of Mum for taking the plunge and opening the gallery. I've always loved her paintings and it's so special seeing her exhibit her own work while also supporting another 25 or so artists.”

She explains “As I head off on my own adventure this September, I really wanted to help curate this exhibition. I chose the nostalgic Wonderland theme partly because I'm growing up and it reminds me of my childhood – the place I grew up, the stories I grew up with and the magic of believing in the impossible. I hope people leave believing in their own dreams too."

After a day and a half transforming the gallery, carefully hanging artwork and styling every display, mother-and-daughter duo Charlotte and Béa are excited to welcome visitors for Bubbles & Browsing on Thursday 30th July 7-9pm.

Visitors can enjoy a complimentary glass of fizz while browsing the exhibition, meeting some of the artists and listening to a gentle acoustic performance by Norman and Ingrid from Halcyon Daze.

Charlotte said:
"Our opening evenings have become such lovely social occasions. They're about much more than simply launching a new exhibition. It's a chance to spend an evening with like-minded people and art lovers in a friendly, informal setting.”

"Parents are very welcome to bring their own budding artists too. It's always such a joy seeing children inspired by what's on display and encouraging their creativity."

The exhibition features exquisite lino cut prints by Patricia Homewood Printmaker; dreamy abstract paintings by Charlotte Keating; whimsical watercolours by Julie Sullivan of Watercolour Puddles Artist; storybook ceramics from Studio Lorenson; hand-stitched textiles by Sara Rickard; dried floral arrangements from Harebell & Bell; felt sculptures by Megan Pugh; silver and sea glass jewellery by Sian Fletcher of Seahord Jewellery; pen and ink driftwood artwork by Grace Engel; lino cut prints by Sarah Delahoy, exclusive accessories by Béa Sparks alongside many more talented local artists and makers represented by the gallery.

Displayed across two light and airy floors, the gallery offers a calm, welcoming space where visitors can browse contemporary art at their own pace, away from the summer heat.

Recent visitors have shared their thoughts:

"Charlotte was very welcoming and, once we'd shown interest in a particular artist, she brought out several more pieces for us to look through. We ended up buying one of the prints, which now hangs proudly in our home. Charlotte is knowledgeable, engaging and a joy to visit." ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
