Community support creates special outdoor space for families at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice

Southsea

Families visiting Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice in Cheltenham can now enjoy a colourful new play area on the back lawn, made possible by the Morrisons Foundation, Nugent Building Contractors and Longlevens Community Association.

The equipment provides a cheerful spot for children to unwind and play while spending time at the hospice.
Sur Ryder Nurse, Stephanie Knight, led the vision for the project. She said: “Sadly, we see many young families spending time on our inpatient unit. These children have parents or loved ones who are very unwell, and I wanted to create a space where they could simply be children. Visiting a hospice can feel intense and sad, so having a bit of normality outside can make such a difference.

“My hope is that as the summer months come, we’ll see families enjoying this area together. With a wheelchair accessible path to the play set, patients can also be part of those moments, and the equipment can even be seen from one of our bedroom windows. Making the hospice feel less scary was really important to me, and I feel this has helped.”

The project was made possible thanks to an £8,000 donation from the Morrisons Foundation, alongside support from Nugent Building Contractors.

Gail Coleman, Community Champion at Morrisons Cheltenham, said: “The play equipment and the area where it is will provide a much needed distraction for visiting families. Morrisons likes to contribute to the community as much as we can, and helping fund this play area was a privilege. Seeing the play equipment assembled and in the lovely surroundings was a pleasure.”

Alysia Cameron Price, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, added: “We’re so grateful to the Morrisons Foundation and Nugent Building Contractors for helping bring this project to life. This space will support families for years to come and offer moments of comfort, connection and play during incredibly tough times.”
