Happy 80th Anniversary to Stroud Arts Festival!
Stroud
The Stroud Arts Festival returns in 2026 to celebrate its 80th anniversary, launching a vibrant programme of music, theatre, dance, art and poetry running from May through to December.
Founded in 1946, the festival is one of the UK’s longest-running arts festivals and remains at the heart of Stroud’s cultural life, bringing internationally renowned performers, together with local artists in a rich and diverse programme.
This landmark year opens with a lively series of events in May, designed to inspire audiences of all ages (and celebrate the festival’s long-standing commitment to creativity and community).
Artistic Director Dave Ayre commented: “This is a special year for the arts in Stroud. Our May programme sets the tone for a year of celebration—bringing together outdoor theatre, music, and community experiences that reflect both the festival’s heritage and its future.”
The May programme includes:
• Saturday 9 May – Brimstone the Dragon by Autin Dance Theatre, a spectacular roaming outdoor performance through Stroud High Street, promising a magical, family-friendly theatrical experience.
• Sunday 10 May – The Monster-Slaying Misadventures of King Arthur, a playful outdoor theatre show full of comedy and audience interaction,
• Sunday 10 May – The Marian Consort, an evening concert blending Renaissance music and art in an immersive visual and musical experience.
The anniversary programme continues throughout the year, with opera, orchestral performances, the long- awaited return of Ballet Cymru, a newly commissioned Stroud Arts Anthem, and culminating in a December production of A Christmas Carol.
With a strong focus on community engagement, the festival also offers inclusive events, educational initiatives, and collaborations with local artists and festivals to showcase the talent that surrounds us.
